Privacy Policy
Last updated October 4, 2026
kayet is a text editor. What you write stays on your Mac. The app has no accounts, no telemetry, no analytics and no crash reporting, and nothing you type is ever sent anywhere.
This policy covers the kayet app for macOS and this website, getkayet.app. Both are made by Piotr Wittchen, who is responsible for the data described below.
The kayet app
Your documents and settings
Files you open, edit and save live only on your disk. kayet keeps its own data in ~/.kayet/ on your Mac: the settings file, the list of open tabs and recent files, a backup of unsaved changes for crash recovery (deleted once the changes are saved or discarded) and downloaded web images. None of it leaves your computer. Delete the folder to remove all of it.
Update checks
About 10 seconds after launch and once a day while running, kayet asks GitHub’s public API for the latest release of kayet. When you choose to update, the new version is downloaded from GitHub. These requests carry no information about you or your documents, but like any web request they reveal your IP address to GitHub. Turn automatic checks off with [updates] check_automatically = false in ~/.kayet/config.toml. See GitHub’s privacy statement.
Web images in your documents
When a Markdown document links to an image on the web (https://…), kayet downloads it once to show it in the preview and stores the copy in ~/.kayet/cache/images/. The server hosting that image sees an ordinary request from your IP address, just as it would from a browser. Documents without web images make no such requests.
Spell check
Optional spell check uses the macOS spelling service built into your system. kayet does not send your text anywhere for it.
This website
Analytics
To see how many people visit and where they come from, this site uses DataFast, a privacy-friendly analytics service. It records page views, clicks on the download buttons, the referring site, your approximate location (country and city, derived from your IP address), and your browser, operating system and device type. It uses first-party cookies to tell new visits from returning ones. It is not used for advertising and the data is not sold or shared with anyone else. You can block it with any content blocker without losing anything on the site. See the DataFast privacy policy.
Server logs
The web server that hosts this site keeps standard access logs (IP address, time, requested page, browser user agent) to keep the site running and secure. They are not used for anything else and are deleted regularly.
Theme preference
If you pick light or dark with the toggle in the top bar, the choice is saved in your browser’s local storage under kayet-theme. It never leaves your browser.
Downloads and links
The download button and source links point to GitHub, which is governed by its own privacy statement. If you email me, I use your message and address only to reply.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU), you have the right to ask what personal data is held about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to its processing. Since the app collects nothing and the website keeps only anonymous statistics and short-lived logs, there is usually nothing to hand over, but just ask: [email protected]. You can also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date. Its full history is in the kayet repository.
